Location: Breathitt County, KY
Conductivity: 1180 μS/cm
Total Dissolved Solids: 865 mg/L
This measurement was taken within the stream, directly below a surface mine sediment pond. The pond was discharging via an outlet pipe and running over the emergency spillway. We identified high conductivity and an acidic pH level in the stream below this pond. The pH level constitutes a permit violation, as it falls below 6.0.
The smaller brown pond is actually quite large: 1.5 acres. The larger dark grey pond is currently permitted for 150 acres, though it is not currently quite that large, according to the mine maps.
